These spaces hinder the activities of workers who must enter, work in, and exit them.
Many workplaces contain areas that are considered a “confined space” because their configurations hinder the activities of workers who must enter, work in, and exit them. Entry into such areas requires a well trained, properly equipped person who is certified to safely perform the tasks required. A Confined Space is defined by the concurrent existence of the following conditions:
- A space that has limited or restricted means of entry or exit
- It is large enough for a person to enter to perform tasks
- Is not designed or configured for continuous occupancy
Examples: sumps, tanks, vaults, vessels and pits.
