Prep Your Pumps Before You Leave & Other Vacation Tips from PumpMan
These five quick and simple tasks can help avoid a disaster while you’re away.
Turn Off the Main Water Supply
Nothing ruins a good vacation like coming home to a major leak and resulting damage.
To avoid this, turn off your main water supply if you’re going to be gone for a week or more. (It’s even a good idea if you’re only be gone for a few days.)
Check the Sump Pump
Another type of water—rainwater—can also be a nightmare. If your sump pump fails while you’re gone and a major storm comes around, you could return to a flood. Make sure the sump pump is working before you leave town. PumpMan can help by performing a full check of the system prior to your departure.
Turn Up the Thermostat—But Don’t Turn Off the A/C
Set thermostat for an away temperature (upper 70s in summer, upper 50s in winter — the rule of thumb is 4 degrees off of what your normal temperature is.)
Unplug Electronics
Even if they’re not on, your electronics are little energy vampires. Unplug your TV and microwave or anything that can save electricity and prevent an electrical fire.
Light Timers
Nothing screams “Come rob me!” like a house or apartment with its lights off. Deter burglars by using timers on lights in different rooms. Set them to go on and off at various times throughout the night so no one will know you’re not actually there
