Thanksgiving is this week, and we’d like to take a moment to thank all of our loyal customers for their continued patronage. This time of year, life can get hectic with all of the preparations for holiday gatherings: cooking, cleaning, buying presents, etc. But it’s important, amid all of the hustle and bustle of the season, to remember the things that are most important, namely the people in your lives. And as your pump repair and supply company, we are thankful to have you all in our lives.

Everyone knows about the story of the first Thanksgiving at Plymouth Colony in 1621, so here are some lesser-known facts about one of our nation’s most important holidays:

  • Although they are now staples of the meal, pumpkin pie, mashed potatoes, corn, and cranberries were not eaten at the first Thanksgiving.
  • Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird of the United States, not the bald eagle.
  • Thanksgiving became officially recognized as a national holiday in 1863, by proclamation of President Abraham Lincoln.
  • The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade became a tradition during the 1920s.
  • President Franklin Roosevelt moved the date of Thanksgiving to November 23, 1939, to extend the Christmas shopping season and boost the Depression-era economy.
  • The fourth Thursday of November became the official date for Thanksgiving by Congressional law passed in 1941.
  • Canadians celebrate Thanksgiving on the second Monday in October. Happy belated Thanksgiving, Canada!
  • Californians consume the most turkey in the United States.

We hope you enjoyed our fun facts as you prepare for your own day of celebration. For those of you who need pump service over the holiday weekend, remember that we here at Pump Man are available to meet all of your pump needs 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. We wish you a relaxing holiday, with the peace of mind that comes from knowing we’re just a phone call away. Happy Thanksgiving!
